The Neptunes 2-Hour Mix

Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams were easily the most revered hip-hop production duo of the early’00s. With beat credits for Busta Rhymes, Clipse, Diddy, and Justin Timberlake, as well as an unforgettable album of their own (In Search Of),anyone who knows anything about hip hop can appreciate what they’ve done. Thankfully, NTS resident Martelo just dedicated his entire two-hour radio show to the group’s prowess. Enjoy 120 minutes of nothing but The Neptunes. You can stream it here with part 2 to follow soon.

2012’s Most Underrated Album: ”ƒIN”, by John...

christopher144:

2012’s Most Underrated Album: ”ƒIN”, by John Talabot

Like most self-proclaimed music junkies, I took it upon myself to construct a best albums of 2012 top 10 list (if I recall correctly, Ocean’s “Channel Orange” topped the list (big surprise!), with “Lonerism,” Lamar’s debut album, and others close on its heels). But in retrospect I realized that there is a sort of convergence amongst these lists of the top critics and taste-makers in music; and that in parallel, there is often a group of well-deserved but chronically under-listened to albums that sort of get left out of the conversation. Even among this cohort one really jumps to mind as a sort of under-appreciated-outlier: John Talabot’s “ƒIN”. I first heard it in October, nearly a half year after it came out, and at first blush thought it was a bit strange [I think the one song with a scream sample scared me off— literally :) ]. But after giving it a second change over the holidays and repeated listens it’s really come to grow on me, taking on new shapes and textures with each and every listen. This sort kaleidoscopic behavior is usually a hallmark of each of my all-time favorite albums and songs, a signature of high auditory complexity that doesn’t wear after repeated use but just keeps transforming. In the case of ƒIN it’s a particularly genre (continent?)-spanning complexity, one that melds catchy beats alongside sun-drenched samples and tropical rhythms.

I don’t have the time or energy right now in finals season to put up a full album review though; if you’re in the mood for that I recommend you read Pitchfork’s review, which although characteristically verbose, does have some interesting backstory on the artist himself that adds a bit of color to the production you hear.

That’s enough writing though— I highly encourage you to give it a listen! Spotify embed of the ‘Deluxe’ Album, which contains a few remixes, is below. The video which introduces this post is an ‘unofficial’ music video for ‘Last Land

Enjoy!

The Mercury Prize winners’ songs play like introductions to longer pieces that will eventually explode into bludgeoning catharsis — and yet instead merely whisper, shimmer and seethe some more. The xx lets its songs billow out softly and quietly, with only pretty guitar lines to lessen the tension.

@MyNameIsBizzle and @BumpsINF have accomplished what so few have yet to accomplish in regards to Hip Hop music…they’ve managed to put out a GREAT project entitled #MartyrsInTheMaking which is considered “Christian Hip Hop,” but sounds just as good, if not better, than a lot of mainstream Hip Hop that’s currently being engulfed by the masses. #Bizzle a.k.a Mark Felder is an L.A. native who has turned down a number of record deals, so that he can stay on his path of righteousness, and his music has been putting other Emcees to task about the nature of their lyrics. Martyrs in the Making is clearly that album that gives you all the hot tracks and catchy rhyme-verses, without having all of the “run-of-the-mill” negative content. #Bizzle really captured a name for himself when he released the song “You got some explaining to do,” which was directed towards @S_C_ (Jay-Z). So whether you’re of faith, no matter your beliefs, or not of faith….you’d still want to listen to the latest mixtape #MartyrsInTheMaking from #Bizzle, which features @BumpsINF who is equally versed in rhyme delivery as well as blessing folks with spittin’ the scripture!

Donna Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, and throughout her great career, has decorated her “trophy room” with 5-Grammys…an amazing talent, but most importantly, an amazing human being. We celebrate her life, and will continue to celebrate her music, and legacy.

thesuperculture:

App Review | Ohm

The iPhone 4 Music app in my opinion is great, its easy to use, clean, and overall gets the job done. However, like everything else in technology, there is always a way to improve or add new features. In comes the recently released Ohm app, the first project from Ohm Labs. This is a dope app to use in combination with the Music app and is mad useful for on-the-go listening. Ohm uses quick and easy controls including swipe to change songs, double tap screen to start or stop music, and one tap playlist creation. But the best feature is the ability for you to easily create a queue of any songs in any order from your music library. Instead of having to constantly re open your Music app to change the song to a different artist or album you can simply create a queue of songs to fit your mood for that moment. In addition, Ohm allows you to import, adjust, and create playlists very quickly and can be added straight to your streaming queue. If that isnt easy enough, Ohm features a one tap Tweet button that auto generates a custom “now playing” tweet for your quick sharing pleasure. We are looking forward to the Ohm Labs updates for this app which will hopefully feature a portrait function, video queuing, and other sharing abilities.

Adam Yauch, who helped make hip-hop a worldwide cultural force as one-third of the influential @Beastie Boys, has died after battling cancer. He was 47. The band’s publicist said in a statement that Yauch died in his native New York on Friday morning. Yauch, also a film director who co-founded the distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories and an organizer of several charitable concerts, including the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, was first diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left salivary gland in 2009. Rest in peace.

After months of intense design work, we finally pulled the trigger on submitting our 1.0 Beta release to Apple’s App Store (more improvements to come shortly after!).
#Google believes technology should work for you — to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t. A team within our Google[x] group started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. Follow along with them at http://g.co/projectglass as they share some of our ideas and stories.
About the “Van Sessions”: Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers are a rock/country/soul band from San Francisco with a busy touring schedule. Between gigs they pass the time by playing cover songs in their van, recording them with an iPhone and posting them online for fun. They do, indeed, wear their seatbelts. For more about the band’s original music check out nickibluhm.com, iTunes, or any YouTube video not set in a van, or just come to a show the next time they drive to your town!
This new EP collaboration between beat-maker Zed’s Dead & rapper Omar Linx is advertised as ‘genre-bending’, and that couldn’t be closer to the truth. These 7 tracks synthesize nostalgic pop samples, sharp rhymes, and heart-stopping dubstep beats into a seamless sonic creation. If you are partial to hip-hop, rap, or dubstep, and especially if you like all of the above, give it a listen. @Soundcloud widget embedded courtesy of Mad Decent or you can click the picture to download from Mediafire directly.
